How to Live Stream Projection Mapping to YouTube and RTMP

Stream mapped visuals live from an iPhone, iPad or Android device to YouTube, Facebook or any RTMP server with LayerMapper MApp – no capture card.

A projection mapping show usually reaches only the people in the room. With live streaming in LayerMapper MApp you can send the same visuals to YouTube, Facebook or any RTMP server at the same time – straight from the phone or tablet that runs the show, without a laptop or a capture card.

What gets streamed

MApp streams its clean output: the composed, mapped image with all layers, shaders, blend modes and animations – the same picture the projector receives, without buttons, handles or menus. What you see in the Preview view is what your viewers get.

Typical uses:

  • VJ sets and club nights – the visuals as a stream next to the DJ’s audio stream.
  • Installations – a permanent stream of an art installation or a shop window.
  • Rehearsals and remote clients – show a client the mapping before the event.
  • Content creation – a clean feed that you can also record to a video file in MApp.

Step 1: get a stream key

  • YouTube: YouTube Studio → Create → Go live → Stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key.
  • Facebook: Live Producer → use a stream key.
  • Custom RTMP: any server or service that accepts RTMP (your own server, a multi-streaming service) gives you a URL and a key.

The key is stored only on your device. Treat it like a password – anyone with the key can stream to your channel.

Step 2: set up the stream in MApp

  1. Build and map your show as usual.
  2. Open the streaming settings, choose YouTube, Facebook or custom RTMP, and paste the URL and key.
  3. Start the stream and check it in YouTube Studio or Facebook before you go public.

Tip: make the first stream unlisted or private and watch it on a second device. You will see the real delay and quality before the audience does.

Step 3: keep the connection stable

  • Use the most reliable network you have: a strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi close to the router, or a wired connection through a USB-C Ethernet adapter on devices that support it.
  • Check your upload speed and compare it with YouTube’s recommended bitrates for the resolution you stream.
  • Close other apps that use the network, and keep the device plugged into power – streaming and rendering at the same time is demanding.

Streaming plus projection

The stream and the projector output run together: the projector shows the mapping in the room, the stream carries it online. Combine it with dual camera input – for example the back camera filming the projection and the front camera on the performer – and the stream becomes a small multi-camera production. See camera capture in projection mapping.

Summary

Live streaming turns a local projection into an online show. Get a stream key, paste it into MApp and test with an unlisted stream first. Live streaming is part of LayerMapper MApp on iOS and Android.
